CHAPTER NINE

Year of our Lord

The morning fog weighed heavily on the old dirt road in front of the lodge.

Jack rubbed the whiskers of his beard in a state of disbelief. "I created the pathway on command. Are you certain you did not assist me?"

"I have never witnessed a gate to the time stream appear as the one you just created. That was beyond me. A time will come when you will be able to do more, Jack. To my knowledge, no living timefarer has ever created a path like that. Now come, let us see to Redmond."

No sooner had Marcus made mention of him when out of a side door he appeared.

"You've lost some age off you, Old Man," Redmond joked to Marcus, hobbling along a bit, still bandaged up around his head and chest.

"How are you mending, you grouch?"

"Well enough. I trust you are here so soon because you encountered Philo?"

"Yes."

"Well there's only one of you left, Marcus. Best take care not to meet the end of that little son of a bitch's blade again."

Marcus grabbed Redmond by the neck, pinning him up against the wall in a fit of rage. His face turned hot red as he seethed a whisper in his right ear.

"You will take care not to speak ill of my ranni, my queen. That bastard was her son as well. Should I meet my demise with him at the end of the blade so be it. My sole task is to end his reign of terror one way of the other. I care naught for little else than this in my life."

"Aye. I meant no offense, General."

Marcus stepped off and away as Redmond exhaled, rolling his shoulders back as if to shrug off what had just occurred. Redmond glanced over at Jack and nodded nonchalantly.

"And you, monsieur? It appears you have witnessed more than a bit of action? How did my teaching serve ye?"

"It served me just fine, Red."

Marcus replied as he approached the main door to the tavern. "Oh, it served him more than fine. The boy has a warrior's heart and learns quickly albeit a touch reckless, much like his teacher."

Redmond gave Jack a hearty slap on the back. "Excellent! Don't lose your nerve, lad."

"Are you OK? Are you on the mend?" Jack asked with reverence.

"Well enough I suppose. It was a bit touch and go the first night, but I am breathing, so that's something!"

"Come gentlemen. There is much to discuss." Marcus picked up his satchel and walked off.

Both Redmond and Jack could not help but stare at their friend. Both wanted to grieve for the loss of the man they previously knew, and yet here he was standing before them in the flesh as alive as ever.

They walked into the Brazenhead. The innkeeper drummed his fingers on the bar and stared at the younger Marcus. "You look familiar, stranger. You remind me of an older gentleman I--"

"My elder brother, sir. A round of ales if you please for all." He tossed a gold bit on the table.
